How do you start writing some music?
Most of my pieces are born out of exploration. I usually sit at the piano and improvise for a bit, and eventually an idea takes over. Be it a melody, a rhythmic pattern, or a harmonic progression. But other times, just the thought of wanting to make something new makes me start to sing. I created a melody while I waited for a bus, and another one as I went up and down the stairs carrying a laundry basket. So, an answer to the opening question could be: look inside (or rather "hear" inside). If you want to make some music, chances are there is already so much music in you which is just waiting to get it.
However, I would never discourage anyone from seeking inspiration outside. Listening to other composers' music is certain to ignite the creative flame. Whether it is you want to sound similar or totally different from Mozart or Copland, listening to them will surely influence your choices. Inspiration is everywhere!
Below, I am listing some of my all time favorite music for you to enjoy (in no particular order). I hope you are inspired to listen, create, share, and enjoy some music every chance you get!
